FlyWithWine Team to Walk in LLS Light The Night

On September 16, the Napa community is taking steps to end cancer in the fourth annual Light The Night event.

Each year, friends, families, and coworkers form teams to participate in one of the 150 Light The Night walk events across the U.S. and Canada. Teams come together to raise money in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) mission — to end cancer.

Approximately every 3 minutes, one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer. LLS is the largest voluntary health organization in the world dedicated to funding lifesaving research and providing support to blood cancer patients and their families.

With these funds, LLS is able to conduct critical research and provide treatments that will save lives not someday, but today.

Greater Bay Area Chapter Girl of the Year: Gertie, age 4

Four-year-old Gertie was admitted to UCSF Bennihoff Children’s Hospital the week of her first birthday. Her mother, Jeni, took her in for a regular wellness check. Doctors were concerned about some bruising — something mom thought was normal for a one-year-old learning to walk.

After several tests, poking, prodding, and a bone marrow biopsy to confirm, doctors sat Gertie’s family down for a conversation no parent should have to hear.

“Your daughter has cancer.”

Gertie went through six rounds of chemotherapy treatment, which required full-time hospitalization for nearly eight months. The goal was to kill all of the bad cells in her bone marrow, which kills all of the good cells, too, and virtually wipes out the immune system. Despite several rounds of chemotherapy and weeklong infusions, Gertie was a trooper — and her cancer was in remission.

“You’d never know she lived most of her second year in the hospital,” said Jeni. “She’s happy, healthy, and thriving. We’re blessed to have such amazing facilities, medical staff, and treatment that helped Gertie beat cancer.”

You can help heroes like Gertie

This year, FlyWithWine is proud to be participating in Napa’s fourth annual Light The Night event and walking alongside heroes like Gertie and her family, friends, and community partners from our wine country family.

Each of our staff members has a personal connection to persons with blood cancers. We’re committed to celebrating those who are fighting the disease while honoring those we have lost.

Join us September 16, as we celebrate LIGHT THE NIGHT and take steps toward ending cancer in our community. Gather with friends and family for the Opening Ceremony, Survivor Circle, and Remembrance Pavilion.
