Putting on the Fritz: Your Thanksgiving dinner pairing guide

This Thanksgiving, we have a lot to be thankful for. There’s nothing better than bringing friends and family together for a homecooked meal and delicious wine. But which wines pair well with which dishes? While it’s harder to go wrong than right, here’s a Fritz wine pairing guide to help you along the way!

Blanc De Noirs

Sparkling wine is the perfect primer for your palate. Not only is it a great way to greet your guests, but it’s pretty much a fail-safe wine to pair with your Thanksgiving dinner. The bright acidity and lively bubbles are the perfect complements to a meal of this size and complexity. Think this is just an appetizer wine? Think again. The Fritz Blanc De Noirs can take you from appetizers to turkey and cleanse your palate through dessert. Plus, bubbles make everything more festive!

Sauvignon Blanc

Stuffing, gravy, and turkey—oh my! Thanksgiving is what savory dreams are made of, so you need a wine that cuts through those heavier, richer flavors. Serving a light-bodied white wine like Sauvignon Blanc is an excellent way to bring a fruity, floral contrast to the dense flavors on your plate. The key is to select a wine with well-balanced acidity, like our 2016 Estate Sauvignon Blanc with hints of vanilla and peach.

Pinot Noir

It’s not hard to see why Pinot Noir is a go-to food wine, with its decadent texture accompanied by a light mouthfeel. This wine is often a top choice for Thanksgiving pairings as it stands up to the creamiest of dishes and works well with both light and dark turkey meat. The fruit-forward flavors make our Fritz Reserve Pinot Noir a great congruent pairing for classic cranberries as well! If you’re looking for a red wine that can handle it all, it’s this one.

Late Harvest Zinfandel

The trick to pairing a dessert wine with dessert is to make sure the wine is the sweeter of the two, otherwise it will end up tasting bitter. Luckily, our favorite pies like pumpkin, apple, and pecan fall more on the savory side! The phenolics of Zinfandel highlight classic Thanksgiving spices like clove, cinnamon, and allspice, and our Late Harvest dessert wine Zinfandel brings a bold richness perfect for wrapping up the evening.
