3 Soup & Wine Pairings to Celebrate Soup Month

3 Soup & Wine Pairings to Celebrate Soup Month

Did you know that January is National Soup Month? This time of year, cold weather is all around us, and there’s no better way to warm up than with a nice bowl of soup. But if we’re being honest, we like to celebrate Soup Month all winter long — okay, maybe even into the spring too. What can we say, we really like soup. But no meal would be complete without a perfectly paired glass of wine, so we’ve taken the guesswork out the pairing process with three of our favorite wine and soup combinations. Bon appétit!

Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup

Meet your new favorite soup. A fun take on a classic, lemon chicken orzo soup takes your mom’s chicken noodle soup and turns it up a notch. This bowl of flavor is smooth, velvety, and vibrant with a punch of fresh lemon, while traditional egg noodles are swapped for orzo pasta. When it comes to the wine, lemon loves lemon. Opt for a fresh and zesty Spanish Albariño— light-bodied, mouth-watering acidity, and exploding with citrus, this is a wine made for fresh ingredients.

Butternut Squash Soup

Arguably the most popular of the winter squashes, butternut squash is the perfect vegetable for cooking into a nice, hearty soup. While it is typically a fall favorite, butternut squash soup is great whenever this vegetable is in season. This meal brings a beautiful pop of color to any weeknight table but is fancy enough for your next dinner party. Plus, the addition of an apple or a pear adds extra tartness and creamy texture without any dairy— enjoy the best of winter comfort food without any of the guilt!

For the wine? This soup would go well with almost any white, but don’t be afraid to pair it with Pinot Noir. Upfront ripe, red fruit will complement the mild spice and earthy notes of your culinary masterpiece.

Tortilla Soup

This season, we’re big on fresh, bright soups, and tortilla soup fits the bill perfectly. Chicken is optional here, so if you’re leaning toward a vegetarian meal, we promise you won’t miss it! This soup is so easy— in just 30 minutes you’ll have a fun and festive meal ready to serve. Comforting, light, and sure to leave you wanting more, this soup calls for a wine that can match its acidity and smoky flavors, like a savory Tempranillo. A younger Tempranillo is fresh, fruity, and medium-bodied, and makes the perfect Spanish wine to uncork with this meal.
